Web 2.0 Design Research Methods
© sladner2

The best web 2.0 design is all about unlocking the Digital Economy by discovering new solutions and technologies. The availability of online usability testing tools in the marketplace has made the job of quantifying user experience much more attainable then in the past. User experience research is very important to quality website design, but it can be a complex process to identify which methods will yield the most helpful results.

In order to provide guidance on this topic, two usability experts from KeyLime Interactive and Paypal will be hosting a panel titled "Combining Research methods to Optimize User Experience Design" at this year's Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. The panel is sponsored by UserZoom, the leading online research software firm that specializes in user experience and usability. Attendees will learn about what methods are out there, when to use them, and how real companies are using these tools to create solutions for their organizations.

When Deciding Your Design, Don't Let the Polish Hinder the Point
© Jason Hargrove

The options are almost endless in the world of web graphic design. The sky isn't the limit, it's just the beginning. And to think, just ten years ago we were in awe at our computers over the ability to see something move across the screen without it taking three hours to load.

But today there are so many possibilities that it can easily get to the point where they not only overwhelm those trying to design, but completely overwhelm those the design is for. A website built to be explosively interactive when a visitor arrives but doesn't drive the visitor towards any particular place or action is destined to do its owner no favors.

It's the simple things – things that an internet marketing company looks for right off the bat but that amateurs overlook – that makes all the difference. Consider the importance of where you put your navigation bar. You might have selected whichever block of free space hadn't already been taken up by an impressive graphic or biting quotation. But anybody with a professional sense of web design is going to be crystal clear that putting the navigation bar in the top left of your page is essential, because that's where the human eye is naturally going to go first, and that's where you want your visitors to click.

Understanding when it's okay to express an artistic vision and when it's better to surrender to a more scientific and deliberate approach to your design is what's most important. Did you know that what words you use will affect how people find you on search engines? Not what you say – the words you use. You have to be calculative when writing your copy, because every word is going to affect how easy or how hard it's going to be to find you.

The majority of websites that offer goods and services that fail to be found by their potential customers find themselves in that position because they did not respect the awesome authority of the Internet search, and mistakenly thought design, like the architecture of a house, style was going to sell itself. Much like the real estate world, the value of your content is based less on pizzazz and more on location, location, location. Make sure the location of your website is a place that can be found.
