Web 2.0 Design Teams

To make a great product, you need people, process, and technology working in harmony. In the 21st century, teams involved in product development are often far-flung across the map, so more companies are turning to the social networking technology to create Web 2.0 design teams that can work together remotely. In a new initiative called social product development, team members and experts are connected across the organization with collaboration tools to accelerate product development.

The newest smartphones, for example, are the products of distributed teams. These phones are designed, engineered, and manufactured in different locations. That doesn't mean that it's easy or quick to implement social product development. It has to start with a culture in a company that encourages communication between people, and gives employees the tools to reduce the natural communication friction that is experienced by distributed workers.
